Bodysnatchers, the very term sent shivers up the spines of Edinburgh's poor. The thought that the bodies of their nearest and dearest may be dissected by the anatomists was too horrifying to consider. Most people believed that they would exist in heaven with the bodies in the state they were in when they died.

Edinburgh's famed anatomy schools prided themselves on letting their students see regular dissections and the lecturers were often not disuaded by little things like 'belief' and 'legality'.

This Interactive Guided Tour has three seperate parts, one on places linked to the bodysnatchers and one which serves as a quick look at life for Edinburgh's poor in the 19th century.

The final tour focuses on the most famous resurrection men of all time, Burke and Hare. This tour gives you a great understanding of the story, in the locations where the terrible deeds happened, for William Burke and William Hare were never bodysnatchers, they were murderers!

Their story is one of the most fascinating periods in Edinburgh's history. Edinburgh's position as one of the emerging centres of excellence in the study of human anatomy ensured that a fresh supply of corpses was always there, but demand far outstripped supply, so much so that lecturers and their students were often forced to go body snatching themselves! Some enterprising people decided that they could go one step further...and not bother with the actual digging up of bodies! A visit to New Calton burial ground reveals the lengths that the people of Edinburgh went to to ensure that the bodies of their loved ones didn't fall prey to the Bodysnatchers.

Mortsafes were another way to deter the 'Resurrectionists'. This one is in Greyfriars Kirkyard, we look at this one and one in Colinton Kirkyard.

Greyfriars Kirkyard was a really attractive target for the Bodysnatchers, some 'lairs' even had metal cagework added to them to foil any attempts to rob the graves.
