Guided Tour 1

Chester's town walls are amongst the best preserved fortifications in Britain. We start our tour at the famous Eastgate Clock. We then find out about some of the the recent problems the walls have faced before moving past Thimbleby's Tower on our way to the Newgate and the Wolfgate. The Wolfgate lets us have a peek back through time as we see some of the Roman defences. Moving on we pass the scene of some of the fiercest fighting of the Civil War before we finish up at Bridgegate.

We head off from Bridgegate and soon pass the outskirts of the area around the old Chester Castle. The world-famous Roodee comes soon after and we get an understanding of why this racecourse was once a harbour which played a crucial role in Roman Chester. It is just a short walk from the finish line at the Roodee to the Watergate - once the biggest money maker on the walls - and the end of our second tour.

Our third tour starts at the Watergate and soon comes to the picturesque Bonewaldesthorne's Tower. We get to explore this tower and the Water Tower in some detail before passing the Northgate Locks and Pemberton's Parlour on our way to the busy St Martin's Gate.

St Martin's Gate doesn't hold our attention for very long so we move off and explore the far more interesting Morgan's Mount. The Northgate comes next and we discover the sad story behind Chester's Bridge of Sighs. The Phoenix Tower comes next and we learn about its links with King Charles I and the defeat of his forces at the Battle of Rowton Moor. We complete our circular tour by arriving back at the Eastgate Bridge.
