Deacon William Brodie is one of the more interesting old Edinburgh characters. It is widely believed that the life of Brodie provided Robert Louis Stevenson with the basis for his book "Jekyll and Hyde". Whether this is true or not could be debated but one thing is certain, the 'dual lifestyle' of Deacon Brodie makes a fascinating story.

Brodie was a member of Edinburgh's 'in-crowd' by day and an unsuccesful gambler and, laterlly, criminal by night. The life of an Edinburgh dandy is covered in this guided tour. We learn of the early life of William before we descend with him into some of the disreputable 'nightspots' which saw him rack up considerable debts...debts which would force him into a life of crime.

This unique Interactive Guided Tour will take you around Edinburgh areas which played a significant role in his life and places he would have visited as a man...and as a criminal.

This tour is perfect if you are interested in the history of Edinburgh or would like to re-trace some of the locations featured on your own visit to Scotland's historic capital city.

This
Deacon Brodie guided tour of Edinburgh follows a path which is split into three seperate tours. Each one looking at a different aspect of the life of one of historic Edinburgh's most notorious sons.

Deacon William Brodie with this innovative Edinburgh tour.

William Brodie was born in to a fairly well-off Edinburgh family. His life should have been one of relative comfort and success. William inherited his father Francis Brodie's business and good name...

Brodie's Close can still be visited today and there is an excellent little cafe in what was one of the rooms of the Brodie house at the head of the close.

Sadly William Brodie, later Deacon William Brodie, became used to a life of gambling and debauchery. He had more than one mistress and a gambling addiction which forced him into a life of crime...
