The Flodden Wall and King's Wall
Edinburgh Castle Esplanade acts as a superb starting point for your first guided tour around the walls. The tour starts by going down to the base of the Castle Crag to discover just how imposing Edinburgh Castle is.
This software acts as a multimedia Edinburgh guidebook, one which guides you around one of Edinburgh's most significant historical remnants.
A marker on a building near the base of the Crag points out that the long lost King's Wall which once started near this location.
Edinburgh Castle was far harder to capture than the Flodden Wall and on more than one occasion the city fell to invaders whilst the Castle remained in the hands of the defenders. From there the Flodden Wall tour goes on to the famous Grassmarket, one-time haunt of Burke and Hare, and on to the only remaining tower in the Vennel.
Next you get to explore the remains of the Flodden Wall in the world-famous Greyfriars Kirkyard and learn about the tragedy of the Covenanter prisoners who were kept in a yard between the Flodden and Telfer Walls.
In your next tour we will go back to the Vennel and follow the Telfer Wall until it rejoins with its larger forerunner at the old Bristo Port. The route of these walls is continued in roads and pathways throughout the tour, with the exception of a small stretch of this tour. Part of the Flodden Wall was discovered when the old building of the Museum of Scotland was built.
You will finish this short section of the virtual tour at the location of the old Potterrow Port. The Potterrow Port was once a major gateway into Scotland's historic capital.

Edinburgh Castle is the most famous building in Edinburgh. Here we can see the front defences. Our tour tells the story of the 'Lang Siege' of Edinburgh Castle and it's defence by Sir William Kirkaldy of Grange.
The Flodden Wall was not the first defence built around Edinburgh. There were more than one and the earliest one we have a good understanding of is the King's Wall which was built in 1450. The Flodden Wall was started in 1513 and shows just how big Edinburgh had become. We are already outside of the King's Wall!
Sadly few parts of the Flodden or Telfer Walls remain for us to imagine what they were like as a defensive structure. One of the exceptions is in the Vennel. The Vennel contains the only remaining tower on the route and is important because it was the 'join' between the Flodden Wall and the Telfer Wall.
