-James Drummond's Old Edinburgh-

These paintings and pictures of Edinburgh are truly works of art. They were included in the book "Old Edinburgh" by James Drummond. Drummond's images of the Old Town are some of the most evocative we've seen. His use of tiny splashes of colour and tone really bring to life the closes and wynds along the streets of the Royal Mile.

"Old Edinburgh" is one of the biggest books we have in our collection. Each image is mounted on a thick sheet of paper and protected by thin paper. The book can be bought from abebooks for around £500 and it really is gorgeous!

What we tend to think of as 'Old Edinburgh' was changed irrevocably during the 'Improvement Acts' of the mid-late 19th century. This act swept away many of the old tenements and buildings which can be seen in Drummond's book. Although there are some photographs of some of the places, Cardinal Beaton's Palace and the house at the top of the Bowhead are good examples, photography by many was still some years away and it is to people like Drummond that we must look for images whch bring the look and feel of 'Auld Edinburgh' to life today.

Over the years we've built up quite a collection of Victorian and early 20th century postcards of Edinburgh.

These low quality images are for flickr use only. If you would like to order digital copies of these for print, publication or any commercial use please don't hesitate to contact us. If you wish to use one of these images on a personal website, or for non-commercial educational use, please contact us - we will most likely grant you free use in exchange for a link to our website.

Many of these images have appeared, or will appear, in our published 'Interactive Guided Tours' and our range of books and e-books.

Having an archive of old pictures of Edinburgh and old images of York is very important to us as there's nothing we like more than being able to have accurate 'then and now' features in our virtual tours and books. You may be quite surprised at how some places haven't changed at all and how some have changed beyond recognition.
We're always keen to build our archive so if you have any postcards, photographs, prints or books which you wish to sell, and you think we would be interested in, please let us know!

Should you have any questions about these images you can contact us by emailing sales@actualeducation.co.uk.
