Around Greyfriars Kirk

In this tour you get a chance to explore the exterior of Greyfriars Kirk. Highlights of this tour include the 'dancing skeleton' which visitors see on the facade of the church as they enter the grounds, the grave of Sir Duncan Forbes of Culloden, a device to deter bodysnatchers and an explosive fact about the church itself!

Duncan Forbes of Culloden sounds like he should have had something to do with the Jacobite Rebellions...and he did. Forbes played a key role in persuading many of the highland clans NOT to support the cause of Prince Charles Edward Stuart, the famous 'Bonnie Prince Charlie'. He had a house in Culloden, the same place where Jacobite hopes were finally dashed. There's also quite a darkly amusing tale about the funeral service for Forbes' mother....

One of the best parts of this shorter tour is the chance to explore the peculiar little mortsafe which lies just next to the church.

This mortsafe is only one of the pieces of evidence in Greyfriars which point to the dark and scary days when 'bodysnatchers' or 'resurrection men' prowled Edinburgh's graveyards in search of freshly dug graves. The corpses were sold to the anatomists who were experiencing huge demand for their medical lectures.

The mortsafe is covered in one 360 degree panoramic scene and video footage. You may rotate the cage itself round 360 degrees. We've also taken a similar 'model' shot of the church itself so that you can see exactly what Greyfriars Kirk looks like.

This software really is like a comprehensive Edinburgh guidebook, one which focuses entirely on the fascinating story of the famous burial ground.

Our walk around Greyfriars Kirk reveals some fascinating artifacts. This isn't a tomb or a monument, it is a mortsafe. Mortsafes were used to deter the infamous bodysnatchers. Greyfriars Kirkyard was right at the heart of the activities of the 'resurrectionists'.

This mysterious dancing skeleton is the memorial to Borthwick of Stow. Our tour explains why this memorial might signify a devilish sense of humour by Borthwick.

Our tour has taken us around some of Greyfriars Kirkyard's most famous, and infamous, memorials, tombs and monuments...but it's not over yet!
