Exploring the North Section of Greyfriars Kirkyard

We believe this little part of Edinburgh is one of the most fascinating places in the capital. Burial grounds may not seem to be particularly exciting but if the people buried there could talk...what stories we would have. Your Greyfriars Kirkyard tour does look at the tombs and their design, but the emphasis is on the people buried here, and what their lives were like.

Your tour first explores the Greyfriars Bobby story- probably the most famous 'resident' in the whole burial ground, before going on to learn out about 'memento mori' - the symbols of death. Some tour guides tell their groups that this is because people from the plague were buried nearby...you will find out the truth! The truth is quite different from what you may have seen in the old Walt Disney movie so be prepared!

The Covenanters will forever be linked to the Kirk and its burial ground and you come to the Martyr's Monument which remembers their struggle to keep the Church of Scotland free from Royal influence. You also find out about how some of the Covenanters died... The Covenanting movement started and, it could be said, ended in Greyfriars Kirkyard. One of the reasons Greyfriars is now so famous is because of the ghostly
Sir George Mackenzie Mackenzie. Although this is not a Greyfriars Kirkyard ghost tour, you will get a chance later on to explore the life of 'Bluidy' Mackenzie and the death of some of the Covenanters. Their stories are closely linked.

Next you ‘meet’ James Craig, designer of Edinburgh’s New Town. James Douglas, Earl of Morton, was once the most powerful man in Scotland but you find out why his tombstone is one of the most overlooked in the burial ground.

A visit to Greyfriars Kirkyard wouldn't be complete if we didn't visit the grave of Greyfriars Bobby (or somewhere close to it - it isn't certain where the wee Skye Terrier is actually buried here).

The fantastic Baroque monuments and tombs in Greyfriars tell us many stories about the people buried beneath them. The monuments we see here were for some important Scots...but not very important ones. You'll find out why in this tour.

A visit to the marker of John Gray finishes the Greyfriars Bobby story. Bobby was said to shelter underneat the table tomb to the left of Gray's marker. There are lots more fascinating stories still to come in your next tour around Greyfriars Kirkyard!
