This virtual tour takes you around Edinburgh's fascinating Flodden and Telfer Walls. We like to call it an 'Interactive Guided Tour' because it is really so much more than a simple virtual tour! This is a multimedia approach to a usually forgotten part of Edinburgh's history. Understanding the impact the Flodden Wall had on the Old Town of Edinburgh is really important in understanding how the city evolved between 1513 and 1746.

Many visitors to Edinburgh don't realise that the city still has some of it's medieval walls left. There are large sections left and the story of the Flodden Wall is one which gives you a great understanding of Edinburgh's history itself. Walking the route at a good pace will only take half an hour, but we ensure that you'll take a little longer and truly soak in the details. Why rush around missing things when you can explore with knowledge and understanding?

In 1513 the largest Scots army ever assembled marched out of Edinburgh's Boroughmuir with King James IV at its head. The invasion of England was James' response to French please for help in their war against King Henry VIII. James not only invaded England with a huge host, he also sent the French some of his most experienced artillerymen. This would prove to be crucial when the English army finally met up with the Scots at Flodden.

Initially it seemed as if the Scots would simply hold on to a very well chosen hill but the English artillery proved far superior to the Scottish guns and forced James off the hill and down to meet the English army. Initial success proved to be fleeting and eventually the English put the Scots to the sword. The Scots suffered one of the most horrific defeats in their history and panic broke out in Edinburgh. Fearing an immediate English invasion, and with no army to defend them, it was decided to construct a secure wall which would protect Edinburgh from attack.

This is the story of how that idea was not turned into reality...and how the Flodden Wall was set to be a failure from the start. This unique virtual tour of the Flodden and Telfer walls uses archive maps and images to help tell the story of Edinburgh's forgotten defences.

Edinburgh Castle is the most famous building in Edinburgh. Here we can see the front defences. Our tour tells the story of the 'Lang Siege' of Edinburgh Castle and it's defence by Sir William Kirkaldy of Grange.

The Netherbow is covered in some detail as it was integral to the Flodden Wall. You get an opportunity to investigate the John Knox House and the Netherbow Ports.
