-Tour Edinburgh...as you wouldn't want to see it!

Tour Edinburgh's Victorian slum areas and learn how the capital could have once been described as a real life 'Jekyll and Hyde' city, where the rich enjoyed the Georgian splendour of the New Town whilst those under the poverty line struggled in unimaginable squalor with almost no chance to improve their lot.

When the New Town was formed towards the end of the eighteenth century, those with money left the Old Town to take up residence in the more spacious, more pleasant houses in the New Town. This diasporah from the Old Town to the New Town didn't happen overnight but by the mid-nineteenth century it was almost complete.

The splendid social mix which was a feature of the Scottish Englightenment began to disappear. The New Town was where the rich lived...the Old Town was where those less well off stayed. Eventually much of it was inhabited only by those on the lowest rung of the ladder. It's these areas of poverty which form this Edinburgh tour.

This unique Interactive Guided Tour takes you around some of the poorest parts of Edinburgh's Old Town. By the mid-nineteenth century the picturesque 'lands' and tenements of the High Street and Cowgate had become
overcrowded, filthy dens of despair. We will follow the routes taken by some of the Victorian professionals who wanted to improve conditions.

These accounts reveal a
terrifyingly grim standard of living. They also remind us of the Victorian middle class attitude that blamed the conditions on alcohol abuse and of following irreligous lifestyles...rather than seeing these as symptoms of the despair caused by living in such appalling conditions with almost no chance of ever escaping them.

Your tour around the slum areas of nineteenth century Edinburgh takes in the
Grassmarket, the High Street and the areas which were swept away in the 'Improvement Act' of 1867 such as Blackfriars Wynd and St Mary's Wynd. You will see how Edinburgh's near-medieval Old Town was changed dramatically during the reign of Queen Victoria...and why it was a change which was badly needed, although a hard one to take in terms of ancient buildings being swept away.
